Sophia Direnna is primarily a graphite artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She recieved her BFA from Chatham University in 2022. Direnna’s work has been exhibited at various galeris and events in the Pittsburgh area. She has attended rasidencies at The Tongue River Artist Residency in Wyoming, and Touchstone Center for Craft in Farmington, PA. Her work meditates on identity and intuition, relating to one another the physical present moment with dreams, memory and imagination in a spiritual context.
Direnna’s drawings are charged with a sensitive approach to shading. Layers of translucent graphite float over each other to create lenses, windows and depth. Fragmented images transposed onto one another expose a composition of incongruent dreams, or flashes of memory. “ I am inspired by nature and the minutia of my natural surroundings. Taking notice of how light reflects on a surface, how the sun catches the light in a patch of dewy grass, or how a shadow is cast on the ground are intangible moments that manifest on the page in luminous shading. My work meditates on identity and intuition and i search to express the commutable forces between the physical experience and the internal world of dreams, memory, and imagination ..”
